Oriental Lacquer Finish

The unique techniques involved in an oriental lacquer finish creates that desirable smooth finish that is characteristic of Vietnamese lacquerware. When making a lacquer vase, lacquer bowl, or lacquer box, many layers of lacquer finish are applied by hand and meticulously inspected. It is said that the more layers of finish on oriental lacquerware will lead to a longer lasting lacquerware product.

Our Asian lacquerware comes directly from rural towns in Vietnam that rely on handmade crafts to sustain. Using methods originally derived from Chinese lacquerware, Vietnamese lacquerware is hand-crafted with many iterations based on thousands of years of tradition. Straying from the traditional balck lacquer finish, many new techniques and styles are applied to create unique pieces. For example, eggshell mosaic art is coated in many layers of lacquer to create a smooth finish that endures.
